Does My Cat Have a Twin? Find Your Cat's Lookalike Free

Almost certainly, yes — your cat has a twin. Cat coat genetics produce a limited set of patterns (tabby, tuxedo, calico, colorpoint, solid) repeated across millions of cats, so a visual search across a few thousand cats usually finds a striking lookalike. You can check in under a minute by uploading one photo to PetMatch, free.

Why cat twins are so common

Cat appearance is driven by a small number of well-understood genes — agouti (tabby vs. solid), white spotting (tuxedos, mitts, blazes), dilution (gray vs. black, cream vs. orange), and colorpoint. A handful of switches, flipped in combination, produce most of the world's cats.

That's why your orange tabby has thousands of near-twins — but it's also why the AI's job is interesting: separating "also an orange tabby" from "the same face."

What the AI looks at beyond the pattern

PetMatch's matching model (here's the full pipeline) fingerprints the face itself, not just the coat:

  • The exact path of a tuxedo's white blaze
  • M-marking shape and stripe spacing on tabbies
  • Eye color and set, cheek width, ear size
  • The asymmetries — a smudged nose patch, one mitten bigger than the other

Two tuxedos can score 75% (same category, different cats) or 93% (genuinely the same face). That difference is what the similarity score captures.

Hard mode: solid black cats

The honest truth: solid-color cats, especially black cats in dim light, are the hardest to match well — there's less visible pattern for the model to grip. They still match (on face structure, eye color, ear shape), but photo quality matters double. Bright, indirect light that shows the face's contours will noticeably improve a black cat's matches.

How to check for your cat's twin
