Whippet Twin Finder: 108 in the Pool

Whippet Twin Finder: 108 in the Pool

To find your Whippet's twin, upload one clear photo to PetMatch and the model compares your dog's face against the 108 Whippets already in the pool, returning the real dog whose face sits closest to yours. The slender outline is what people notice first, but the match leans on the long lean skull, the rose ears, and the dark eyes in a face with scarcely any stop.

A slender outline, without coarseness

The AKC standard describes the Whippet as a medium size sighthound giving the appearance of elegance and fitness, denoting great speed, power, and balance without coarseness. All forms of exaggeration should be avoided. Ideal height is 19 to 22 inches for dogs and 18 to 21 inches for bitches, measured at the withers. More than one-half inch above or below those limits is a disqualification. Length from forechest to buttocks is equal to or slightly greater than the height, and bone is moderate throughout. The brisket is very deep, reaching nearly to the point of the elbow, and there is a definite tuck-up of the underline. That tuck-up on moderate bone is the slender build. A face photo shows none of the height.

The skull is long and lean, fairly wide between the ears, with a scarcely perceptible stop. The muzzle is long and powerful without coarseness, and lack of underjaw is strictly penalized. The nose leather is fully pigmented: black, dark blue, or dark brown, so dark as to appear nearly black. The coat is short, close, smooth, and firm. Any other coat is a disqualification. Color is immaterial, so coat shade separates two Whippets less than the skull and the ear do.

The eyes are large and round to oval, dark brown to nearly black. Eye color can vary with the coat, but dark eyes are always preferred. Light eyes are undesirable, yellow eyes are strictly penalized, and a blue eye, any portion of blue, or eyes that do not match is a disqualification. The ears are small rose ears, fine in texture. In repose they are thrown back and folded along the neck, and the fold should stay when the dog is at attention. Erect ears are severely penalized.

What the matcher keys on

PetMatch matches on facial geometry and pattern rather than a breed label; how the AI matching works covers the details. For a Whippet the strongest signals are the long lean skull, the faint stop, the long muzzle, and the rose ears folded along the neck. Because color is immaterial, a solid coat does not separate dogs the way patches do, so the model leans on those proportions and on the dark iris. Open shade keeps the stop and the eye rims readable.

Whippet or Greyhound?

A short smooth coat, a deep chest, and a tucked waist are easy to mix up in a tight crop of the face. The Greyhound standard writes the head in nearly the same language: long and narrow, fairly wide between the ears, a scarcely perceptible stop, and a muzzle that is powerful without coarseness. The coat is short, smooth, and firm, and color is immaterial on both breeds. The eyes are dark, bright, and intelligent, indicating spirit.

The scale is the split, and a headshot hides it. Moderate bone on that frame sits next to a taller hound. The AKC lists Greyhound height at 28 to 30 inches for males and 27 to 28 inches for females, and the breed standard gives weight as 65 to 70 pounds for dogs and 60 to 65 for bitches. The chest is deep and as wide as is consistent with speed, and the loins are well cut up in the flanks, so the same slender curve is drawn on a larger dog.

The ears part company when the dog is alert. A Whippet's rose ear keeps its fold at attention. A Greyhound's small ears are thrown back and folded, and they semi-prick when the dog is excited. The Greyhound pool holds 115 dogs, separate from these 108. A shared narrow muzzle and a short smooth coat are usually why one shows up in the other's matches.

A Borzoi can rank nearby for the same long head and faint stop. Its coat is the clear split: long and silky, where a Whippet's stays short, close, and smooth. The Borzoi twin finder covers that breed, and its pool holds 119 dogs.

When the twin is a mix

A short-coated mixed-breed dog with a long lean head, a faint stop, and small folded ears can out-rank purebred Whippets. The model is matching the face in the photo, not guessing at a pedigree.

Getting a good photo

Shoot head-on at eye level in open shade, with both eyes, the dark nose, and the full length of the muzzle visible. Leave the rose ears in their natural fold so the set reads true, rather than holding them erect. Skip direct sun, which flattens a short coat, and skip filters that push a fawn coat toward red or a white coat toward gray.
